Apr 11, 2013 The Hungry Gap The Hungry Gap Gardeners used to refer to this time of year as the Hungry Gap. Winter crops like cabbages and roots would be coming to an end and the anticipated abundance of summer was still some way off. Our vegetable boxes are still full of local seasonal vegetables but perhaps you may want some inspirational tips on recipes? Cauliflowers are delicious at the moment. Is Cauliflower Cheese your thing? Why not spruce it up with some shavings of vintage cheddar and a dusting of chilli flakes, or, have some pasta with walnuts and cauliflower florets with a dash of cold pressed rapeseed oil, a quick and easy, meal after a spring walk! How about Leeks? They have enjoyed our winter weather and are sweet and pale. Finely chopped leeks with a nice piece of fish or on their own with white wine, tarragon and a dab of butter. A lovely light supper to enjoy as the nights draw out. Nearly all of our vegetables are locally grown and all our vegetables are British. The main advantage of our vegetables will be in the taste, they taste like they are supposed to! The arguments are many for eating local fresh produce but it is worth remembering that our vegetables have not been forced to grow all year round, nor wrapped in lots of plastic packaging or had to endure many air freight miles. We really hope you continue to expand your recipe collection and trust our website provides some useful ideas. Coming soon will be the spring and summer vegetables........get ready for Rhubarb and the seasonal Jersey Royals! We will be running updates on availability so please feel free to call and enquire, or, send us an email at info@parsnipsandpears.co.uk. At Parsnips and Pears we think Vegetables all year round : )
